We hope everyone had a successful few days at the no. 1 trade fair for plastics and rubber in the world! According to the K-online.com website, 230,000 trade visitors from over 160 countries were welcomed to the exhibition halls over the eight days of K 2016! Werner Matthias Dornscheidt, President & CEO of Messe Düsseldorf, says, “Just the sheer number of experts visiting K 2016 impressively confirm the appeal and importance of the trade fair – since this number is once again clearly higher than at the previous event in 2013. However, what is more important: the breakdown of trade visitors was of an exceedingly high standard. We can register a constantly good level of demand from Germany and a disproportionately high level of interest from abroad, especially from overseas. It is known the world over that K in Düsseldorf is THE innovation platform for the entire  Injection Blow Moulding Machine sector. A visit here is simply indispensable for everyone wanting to stay ahead of the competition.” During this amazing fair, we met some wonderful and friendly new customers from Azerbaijan! We are now into Q3 of 2016, and the distribution of North American resin is definitely a mixed bag. Third-party sales of polyethylene and polypropylene — the region’s most widely-used commodity resins — are now only growing slightly. However, some executives at some firms are seeing more positive results. “We just finished 10 months of our fiscal year, and we’ve already sold more than we did in fiscal 2015,” said Ed Holland, president and CEO of M. Holland Co. in Northbrook, Ill. “And that doesn’t even include Latin America and Puerto Rico. Our organic growth has been double-digit and broad-based. “Some of the moves we’ve made in the last three to five years are paying off,” he added. “We’ve brought in new people and new product lines.” Read full article here....

A breakthrough in technology may help to slash the plastic industry's global annual carbon dioxide emissions by up to "45 million tons, or the equivalent of around 5 million households." Scientists from ExxonMobil Corp. and the Georgia Institute of Technology have been researching advancements to reduce the amount of energy and emissions associated with manufacturing plastics and cut costs by up to $2 billion annually. “If advanced to commercial-scale application, this technology could significantly reduce the amount of greenhouse gas emissions associated with chemical manufacturing,” said Vijay Swarup, vice president of research and development at ExxonMobil Research and Engineering Co.   Read full article here....

In the past few years, the chemical bisphenol-A, better known as BPA, has been claimed to be harmful and controversial in spite of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s declaration in 2014 that BPA exposure is safe for humans. Recently, bisphenol-S, a polycarbonate component (BPS) has been used in products labeled as "BPA-free", in theory, to reduce consumers' concerns with the plastic. However, BPS is now thought to be considerably more harmful than the controversial chemical it is meant to replace. Published in the journal PLOS Genetics, findings in “Exposure to the BPA Substitute Bisphenol-S Causes Unique Alterations of Germline Function” indicate BPS harms eggs at even lower concentrations than bisphenol-A. In an effort to bring awareness to plastic pollution, innovative plastics use is being highlighted in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. From sports equipment to artificial grass and event venues, along with ribbons for medals and sculptures made from recycled bottles, plastics are being used in a variety of applications. In addition, about 143 pounds of recycled plastic bottles were used to build the Olympic Rings sculpture on Copacabana Beach. Other methods for cutting the carbon footprint are being used; Including Dow Chemical Co.’s micro-foaming technology for packaging. This initiative is reported to cut 4.4 billion pounds of carbon dioxide impact at the Summer Games. Read the full article here....

Houston-based IHS Chemical reported that phthalates accounted for 70% of the world’s consumption of plasticizers in 2014 last year, which was down from about 88% in 2005. The projection is that they will drop to 65% in 2019. An important IHS caveat, however, is that China accounts for such a large share of the total market. The 2015 IHS report placed DEHP at 37% of the global market, down from about 54% in 2010, and DINP now accounts for about 16%. Read full article here....

Ford and Jose Cuervo explore development of sustainable bioplastic Who would think that tequila and car parts would go hand-in-hand? It is a possibility now that Ford Motor Company of Dearborn, Michigan has teamed up with Jose Cuervo. Their goal is to develop a bioplastic using the fiber byproduct of agave plants. The agave plant would add to Ford's list of sustainable-based materials that it already uses in its vehicles, including soy foam, castor oil, wheat straw, kenaf fiber, cellulose, wood, coconut fiber, and rice hulls. “As the world’s No.1-selling tequila, we could never have imagined the hundreds of agave plants we were cultivating as a small family business would eventually multiply to millions. This collaboration brings two great companies together to develop innovative, earth-conscious materials.” said Sonia Espinola, director of heritage for Cuervo Foundation and master tequilera. In a recent article, “Scientists call for better plastics design to protect marine life,”  reporter Fiona Harvey interviewed experts in London about ways that the plastics industry should change to reduce the volume of plastic that’s ending up in the ocean. The scientists interviewed suggested making changes to materials to encourage more recycling, which may prevent single-use containers from ending up as litter and marine debris.  Read the full article here....

Machine makers experienced a 13.5 per cent year-on-year rise in shipments during the first quarter of 2016. Between January and March, $330.5 million (€293 million, £233.3 million) was reported, which was well above the $291.2 million recorded for 2015's Q1, but 15.4 per cent less than the £390.6 million recorded from Q4 of 2015 which is typically the strongest quarter of the year. Plenty of potential for recycling Technologically, plastics recycling is not a problem at all today. In-house recycling has now become established right across industry. For plastics processors who work with pure-grade raw materials, the waste-free factory has become commonplace. And for post-consumer wastes, there are increasingly mature reutilisation strategies, enabling the regranulate produced with them to substitute virgin material without problem. In the last few years particularly, there has been fast-growing demand for recompounds, pigmented and/or reinforced granulates produced entirely from residues. All the same, the industry still has a number of hurdles to take and problems to solve. Profitability, optimised collection strategies, political targets, consumer interests and education, and the design of recyclable plastics products are just some of the core themes.
